Credits make the difference
A four-credit course changes GPA more than a one-credit course. A plain average of the letter grades can give the wrong result.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
The default scale assigns A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and continues to F = 0. Some institutions use different values, exclude pass/fail courses, replace repeated grades, or do not award A+ above 4.0.
Optional course-level weighting adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, capped at 5.0. This is a planning convention, not a universal admissions rule. Use the official school calculation when available.
